THE CJM IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED. SUPPORT US DURING OUR TRANSITION, SIGN UP FOR UPDATES, OR RENT THE MUSEUM FOR YOUR EVENT

On the eve of the California Jewish Open at The CJM, we reflect on the Jewish values that guide us as an institution. A central Jewish teaching is that all life is sacred and demands protection. While there is not a singular Jewish perspective, we believe that the commitment to humanity—to building a just world and shared future for all—unites us. As a Jewish institution and a center for contemporary art, we reaffirm our conviction that to call for the swift return of all Israeli hostages and an end to the ongoing violence against Palestinian civilians is not a political stance but an essential moral position. We are devastated by the tremendous loss of all innocent lives, for the families that will never be whole again, and the widespread displacement of people from their homes. We continue to hold in our hearts a wish for lasting peace and security in Israel and Gaza.

We write this in the wake of the horrific events that have taken place in recent days and that continue to unfold. There is deep pain felt in the Jewish community around the world. We have been processing our shock and grief at the atrocious terrorist attacks by Hamas, the devastating loss of life, and the continued anguish and worry for the safety of the hostages. We are heartbroken for the innocent Israeli and Palestinian families who are suffering from historical trauma, current violence, and palpable dread for what is to come.

Here in our own Bay Area community, we anticipate that recent events may lead to a spike of antisemitism and Islamophobia. Since its inception, The Contemporary Jewish Museum has upheld Jewish life and culture, carried it out into the wider world, and taught ways to work against prejudice to build a world free of intolerance. As school groups entered The Museum these past few days, we continued to engage in important conversations with young people about how Jewish culture can foster belonging, empathy, and acceptance of others.

In this dark moment, as we process the horrible trauma, we open our hearts and find connection through our shared humanity. Art and community can offer some comfort during times of immense challenge and heartache. To provide a space for respite, we are opening our doors for free this weekend, and we invite you to come and spend time in community at The CJM.

At The Museum, we work to manifest a world free of hatred and bigotry, one in which people of all backgrounds and identities may flourish. We pray for a resolution that enables all people impacted by this tragic conflict—Israelis, Palestinians, and people around the globe—to live in peace and safety.

We pray for peace,
