Resistance: The LGBT Fight Against Fascism in WWII (Stacked Deck Press, 2018) is a 2019 Lambda Literary Award Finalist. London, Paris, and Berlin were exciting and vibrant hubs for LGBT culture in Europe in the 1920s and early 1930s, flush with drag shows and gay clubs, newspapers, literature, art, and more. That all changed with the rise of fascism and Hitler's power grab in 1933. In a few short years, the liberal Weimar Republic in Berlin—a progressive democracy—gave way to a Nazi-led dictatorship. Lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transsexuals fought against the Nazis, but their struggles have often been overlooked by history books. Resistance: The LGBT Fight Against Fascism in WWII honors the stories of those unsung heroes. This important book is a collection of fully-illustrated historical biographies of forty-one LGBT freedom fighters with illustrations by twenty-one contemporary LGBTQ+ activists. Written by Avery Cassell; edited by Diane Kanzler; Foreword by Laura Antoniou.
Avery Cassell is a writer and artist living in San Francisco with their Maine Coon cat, Lulu. Their books include the 2019 Lambda Literary Finalist Resistance: The LGBT Fight Against Fascism in WWII; The Butch Lesbians of the 20s, 30s, and 40s Coloring Book; The Butch Lesbians of the 50s, 60s, and 70s Coloring Book; and Behrouz Gets Lucky, a light butch-transmasculine romance novel. You can also find their erotic short stories in various anthologies, including Best Lesbian Erotica 2015; Unspeakably Erotic: Lesbian Kink (a 2018 Lambda Literary Finalist); and Sex Still Spoken Here.
Diane Kanzler is an artist, writer, book designer, and copy editor who lives in western Massachusetts. She studied illustration and painting at Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. Kanzler contributed illustrations for and copy edited Butch Lesbians of the 50s, 60s, and 70s Coloring Book and was the editor and book designer of Resistance: The LGBT Fight Against Fascism in WWII. Kanzler has also published queer erotica in 2019 Lambda Literary Finalist Best Lesbian Erotica, Volume 3 under a nom de plume.
