Ezra Jack Keats: Teacher Arts Integration Workshop

Thursday, September 21, 2023 | 4:30–6:30pm

ADMISSION: Free with advanced registration

Gain new tools to integrate a visual art experience with your literacy curriculum. At this workshop, elementary and art teachers can learn to incorporate The CJM’s award-winning Stories and Art of Ezra Jack Keats program into their classrooms. Teachers will be introduced to Keats’s biography as the son of Jewish immigrants; his path to becoming an artist; and his choice to portray characters of color who reflected the Brooklyn neighborhood where he lived. Teachers will then participate in and learn art projects inspired by Keats’s illustrations that focus on bringing small moments to life through collage.

Participating teachers will receive a set of classroom art supplies for the art making project, a copy of one of Ezra Jack Keats’s books, and a short video to share with your class!

This program is geared toward K–2 Teachers, and is eligible for FWEA PD hours. Dinner is included.

About the Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Project

The Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Project is an annual project presented by The Contemporary Jewish Museum (The CJM), the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), and the San Francisco Public Library that promotes the art and craft of original bookmaking in the classroom, and invites SFUSD students in grades K–12 to design, write, and create their own books. At the end of the project, books will be honored, showcased, and celebrated.
