GRANT WRITER
Position Description

The Contemporary Jewish Museum (The CJM) seeks a Grant Writer to provide direct support to the Director of Institutional Giving in implementating The CJM’s comprehensive fundraising plans with corporations, foundations, and government agencies. This position requires excellent skills in writing, attention to detail and planning, cross-departmental collaboration, and knowledge of The Museum’s programs and donor base.

The Grant Writer manages a portfolio of corporate, foundation, and government grants, raising significant revenue through grants to meet The CJM’s development goals for institutional giving. The Grant Writer will identify new grant funding opportunities and perform grant research, grant writing, and grant reporting. The successful individual in this role will enthusiastically advocate for The CJM’s mission and have direct experience with best practices in grant writing for the arts and/or Jewish philanthropy.

Status: Regular, Full-time, Non-exempt

Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Compose compelling and persuasive grant proposals to meet revenue goals
  • Support the Director of Institutional Giving in developing and enhancing funding opportunities
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all CJM programs and projects
  • Work closely with program colleagues to retrieve, develop, and synthesize content for grant proposals and reports, ensuring all are submitted on time
  • Provide writing support across the development department as needed
  • Assist with the cultivation and stewardship of corporate, foundation, and government donors
  • Research grantors on a regular basis by seeking new grant opportunities using philanthropy news media and grantor websites; recommend prospects for solicitation
  • Develop and maintain fundraising administrative tools including Altru donor database records, prospect profiles, solicitation and reporting calendars, and spreadsheets tracking income and progress towards goals
  • Maintain and manage credit lines as assigned
  • Manage grant fulfillment, including writing acknowledgement letters and sending grant agreements and sponsorship packages to donors
  • Prepare materials for internal and external meetings
  • Assist the development department at donor and VIP stewardship events, exhibition openings, tours, and galas as assigned, and as a representative of The CJM
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Arts or Science degree
  • Minimum of two years of grant writing experience in a non-profit development department
  • Demonstrated experience in best practices for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of corporate, foundation, and government donors
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local and national corporate, foundation, and government philanthropy for the arts and culture
  • Commitment to the mission and core values of The CJM
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in Altru, Raiser’s Edge, or other fundraising databases
  • Excellent verbal, reading, and written English communication skills
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills; ability to craft both technical grant proposals and persuasive writing
  • Basic financial management skills, including developing and monitoring budgets and financial reports
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Professional (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point), Adobe Acrobat Professional, and Internet-based research
  • Excellent research skills in philanthropy and grant opportunities
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and produce high-quality results on time and with attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively with CJM staff, volunteers, and donors
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends for events, as needed
