Jewish Folktales Retold Artist Portrait: Laurel Roth Hope and Andy Diaz Hope

In their collaborative practice, Laurel Roth Hope and Andy Diaz Hope combine their concepts and skill sets in creating pieces that are informed by their relationship to architecture and nature. They both were recently artists in residence at de Young Museum in San Francisco.

Laurel Roth Hope (b. 1973, Concord, CA; lives and works in San Francisco, CA) has shown her work at the Smithsonian Museum, Washington DC; Museum of Art and Design, New York, NY; and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AK. 

Andy Diaz Hope (b. 1967, Mountain View, CA; lives and works in San Francisco, CA) has exhibited his work at Museum of Art and Design, Palo Alto Art Center; Museum of Contemporary Art Denver; and the National Gallery of Victoria Australia. He received his BS and MS from Stanford University.

Jewish Folktales Retold: Artist as Maggid presents newly commissioned works of art by sixteen contemporary artists in response to a selection of tales from Jewish folklore. Acting as modern maggids—storytellers, transmitters of knowledge, secrets revealers—they explore the many facets of these stories’ characters, themes, and metaphors. Artists include: Michael Arcega, Julia Goodman, Dina Goldstein, Andy Diaz Hope and Laurel Roth Hope, Vera Iliatova, David Kasprzak, Mads Lynnerup, Elisabeth Higgins O’Connor, Mike Rothfeld, Tracey Snelling, Chris Sollars, M. Louise Stanley, Inez Storer, and Young Suh and Katie Peterson.
