Experience the ecstatic high-energy happening-style of the Beats during Quiet Lightning’s Ginsberg-inspired literary performance. The Neighborhood Heroes reading honors exceptional members of the Bay Area literary world. Authors include: Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley (A Thousand Acres), Pushcart Prize winner Susan Steinberg (Hydroplane), former Fulbright scholar Michael David Lukus (The Oracle of Stamboul), Lambda Literary Award winner Kevin Killian (Impossible Princess), novelist Glen David Gold (Carter Beats the Devil), critically acclaimed poet Joseph Lease (Testify), poet Tom Comitta, novelist Lisa Brackman (Rock Paper Tiger) and more.

Inspired by Ginsberg’s collection of inscribed snapshots, Bay Area artists and scholars will create a unique performance based tour of the gallery. Performances will be drawn from encounters with Allen Ginsberg and his legendary cohort of Beat writers, artists, and lovers. Performers and scholars include Jewelle Gomez, Richard Meyer, Tirza Latimer, Justin Chin, Jaime Cortez, and DL Alvarez. Created by the Queer Cultural Center.

 Living in Berkeley in 1955, Allen Ginsberg completed the bulk of a collection of poems which would soon be published as Howl and Other Poems. Conspiracy of Beards musical director, Daryl Henline, arranges the poems into original musical compositions for voice and instruments. Performers include Afi Ayanna, Allison Fenner, Berel Alexander Steinberg, and Peter Whitehead.
