Censored! Teaching Queer History and Identity Through the Art of Cary Leibowitz

Thursday, Feb 2, 2017 • 4:30–7:30 pm

ADMISSION: Free with RSVP to schools@thecjm.org

Provocative, startling, and sometimes even offensive to some, Contemporary Art can be a powerful and engaging way to explore controversial topics and issues. Check out the text-based art of Cary Leibowitz, also known as “Candyass,” an artist who explores issues of identity as a gay Jewish man, then learn about ways art can be used as a tool for visibility and resistance. Co-led by Lyndsey Schlax, teacher leader, arts integration specialist, and curriculum expert for the SFUSD LGBTQ Studies program and Adrienne Weiss, art and social studies teacher, Capuchino High School. Includes a gallery experience, resources, and a light dinner.
