Position Purpose

The Contemporary Jewish Museum (CJM) is looking for a flexible, creative, results-oriented professional to fill the position of Manager of Institutional Giving.  Reporting to the Deputy Director for Development, this position is a key member of the CJM’s Development Department, which presently raises over $4 million annually.

The Manager of Institutional Giving is responsible for the day-to-day management of all aspects of the institutional giving program, which includes identifying prospects; managing cultivation, stewardship, and benefits fulfillment for foundation, corporate, and government support; overseeing gift acknowledgement; and maintaining the grants pipeline and reporting calendar.

He/she will play a leading role on the Development team as the primary staff person responsible for insuring the proper stewardship and cultivation and of all institutional donors at a key moment of growth for the CJM.  Together in close partnership with the Museum’s Director, Deputy Director for Development and the Chief Operating Officer, this individual manages essential relationships for the Museum; maintaining and growing all aspects of institutional giving, including foundation, corporate and government grants, and sponsorships, and specified support for CJM exhibitions and programs.


Essential Job Responsibilities:

Strategy and Leadership

  •  Works with the Deputy Director for Development and other key staff to establish annual revenue goals, strategies, and priorities for foundation, corporate and government support.  Collaborates with senior staff to develop and implement strategies to maintain current institutional funders and to identify and cultivate new resources and relationships.
  • Manages donor stewardship, solicitation and cultivation of relationships with past, current and potential funders, along with the Development Associate for Stewardship and Events and often in coordination with the Museum’s Director and the Deputy Director for Development.
  • Writes initial grant narratives for exhibitions, programs and other projects that can be tailored for specific requests and proposals, and coordinates the writing of letters of inquiries, grant proposals and reports for foundations and government agencies with Development Associate for Stewardship and Events.
  • Meets regularly with the Deputy Director for Development to coordinate activities, along with the Museum’s Development Committee and other Board members. Also meets regularly with senior and program staff to stay informed of Museum projects and general institutional direction.  Communicates regularly with program staff to ensure grant objectives are met and monitors progress of projects in relation to grants.  Ensures timely and accurate reporting to foundations, corporations and government agencies.
  • Works closely with Development Associate for Stewardship & Events and other Development staff in the design and coordination of Museum events and special exhibition openings, maximizing these events as cultivation opportunities for institutional funders.

Foundation Support

  • Working closely with the Deputy Director for Development, manage all aspects of a essential and successful foundation giving program at the Museum, with combined unrestricted and specified annual goals in excess of $1.5 million.
  • Works with the Deputy Director for Development and the Board of Trustees to identify and cultivate foundations to support the Museum and facilitates Trustee solicitation and on-going communications.
  • Maintains a high level of consistent reporting and stewardship for all foundations, working closely with the Development Associate for Stewardship & Events

Corporate Support

  • Continue to meet corporate giving goals at the CJM, presently in the amount of $300,000 annually, including specified and unrestricted support.
  • Works with the Deputy Director for Development and the Board of Trustees to identify and cultivate corporate prospects and facilitates Trustee solicitation and stewardship of corporate sponsors.
  • Grows and develops recently formed Corporate Leadership Council, with an eye on increasing the prospect pool and working closely with Council Co-chairs, along with the Development Associate for Stewardship & Events and the Museum’s Facility Rental and Events Manager on quarterly meetings on the volunteer leadership
  • Writes proposals for corporate sponsorships and grants, ensuring that sponsorship packages are fully vetted by CJM staff and when appropriate, by Trustees and negotiates and finalizes sponsorship agreements and contracts.
  • In partnership with the Development Associate for Stewardship & Events and other Development and Membership staff, ensures fulfillment of sponsorship benefits in line with and as a compliment to the Museum’s Membership and Facility Rentals programs.
  • Serves as primary contact for corporate prospects and funders as well as foundation and government agencies. Makes solicitation phone calls, follow-up calls, and facilitates communications between CJM staff and Trustees and corporate partners.

Government Support

  • Working closely with the Deputy Director for Development, manages deadlines and reporting schedule to maintain and expand government support for the CJM, with $85,000 in annual support from local, municipal resources, namely Grants for the Arts/Hotel Tax Fund; and national grants averaging $70,000 per year variously from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) or the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).
  • Provides budget reports, along with qualitative and quantified analysis as required for all government funders, working closely with the Development Associate for Stewardship and Events.

General

  • Participates in the development of short- and long-term fund raising plans and develop annual goals for the growth of individual support, along with a plan with strategies to achieve those goals.
  • Utilizing the Raiser’s Edge database Prospect Module, tracks all individual fund raising and prospecting activity with an eye on continual growth and improvement. Maintains accurate and complete records of contacts and communications and analyze donor and prospect data to identify and qualify targets for restricted and unrestricted support.
  • Maintains credit lines for exhibitions and programs to ensure proper acknowledgement of funders on all CJM printed and electronic collateral.
  • Uses the CJM’s Raiser Edge database to maintain institutional contact information and to track proposals and progress toward meeting goals.
  • Attend all Development events, including exhibition openings, donor benefit and cultivation events, as a member of the Development Department, attend CJM events to cultivate and meet potential donors.
  • Performs other tasks as needed and is available to work weekends and evenings when necessary
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Arts or Science degree
  • Minimum five years of professional grant writing experience with demonstrated ability to write successful grant proposals at corporate, foundation and governmental levels
  • Excellent strategic, leadership, organizational and planning skills
  • Proven track record of working effectively with senior staff, board members and other volunteer leaders, and foundation, government and corporate representatives.
  • Effective communication, presentation, and problem solving skills.  Ability to communicate effectively in person and on the telephone with staff, Trustees, and donors.
  • Ability to compose correspondence with accuracy.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to sustain a positive attitude and sense of humor while working under pressure and against deadlines.
  • Independent judgment, decision-making authority and common sense are essential prerequisites of the job.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook. Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge database software highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment.
