The Organizing Principles of Libeskind's Design

In this view of the roof of the Museum, one can see the two forms that comprise the Daniel Libeskind-designed extension. Inspired by the Hebrew phrase L'Chaim (To Life), the architect based forms of the extension on the Hebrew letters "chet" and "yud." These two letters form the buildings abstract organizing principles: the rectangular shape that traverses the length of the substation represents the "chet," while the more cube-like shape that overlooks Yerba Buena Lane is the "yud."
