About the Program
Experience the next chapter in seder plate history by attending the awards ceremony for The Dorothy Saxe Invitational, during which both the Dorothy Saxe Award for Creativity in Contemporary Arts, and the Audience Choice Award, will be announced and presented. Visitors will have a chance to meet the winners and finalists for the awards, including artists Lynne Avadenka, Tor Archer, John Bankston, Beth Grossman and Gay Outlaw.
In addition to a brief overview of the artists' work, CJM Director Connie Wolf will engage the artists in a roundtable discussion about the art and meaning of Jewish ritual objects today.
The Dorothy Saxe Award for Creativity in Contemporary Arts
This award is named for Dorothy Saxe, a Museum Trustee and a highly-regarded and nationally recognized collector of art and crafts. The Award is determined by a jury of distinguished curators, who have selected an artist whose work is both distinctive, and reflects the goals of the exhibition in the most innovative and creative ways. This year's jurors were Timothy Burgard, Curator of American Art, Fine Arts Museums, San Francisco; Susan Krane, Oshman Executive Director of the San Jose Museum of Art; CJM Trustee Dorothy Saxe; and Rabbi Peretz Wolf-Prusan, Congregation Emanu-el, San Francisco. The finalists for this award are: Lynne Avadenka, John Bankston, Gay Outlaw and Melissa Shiff.
The Audience Choice Award
This award allowed Museum visitors to participate actively in honoring one artist in the exhibition. Over the past 2 months, hundreds of artists cast their ballot for their favorite seder plate in the exhibition. The finalists are: Lynne Avadenka, Tor Archer, and Beth Grossman.
