About the Program

Join the StoryCorps Memory Loss Initiative for an evening discussion about the therapeutic effects of music for people with Alzheimer's disease. Nicholas Sager, Recreation Specialist at On Lok Lifeways, and Judith-Kate Friedman, award-winning vocalist, songwriter, and producer describe examples of innovative new programs, provide audience members with ideas to incorporate music into their daily lives as caregivers and professionals, and speak to the power of song throughout one's life.

About Nicholas Sager

A Recreation Specialist at On Lok Lifeways, Sager is responsible for comprehensive therapeutic programming and resource development of the recreation therapy department, which serves frail seniors enrolled at eight Lifeways centers in the Bay Area. Sager is a board certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) and earned his MA degree in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Music Therapy from Naropa University, in Boulder, CO. He also earned a bachelor's degree in Studio Art from Vassar College, in New York.

About Judith-Kate Friedman

An award-winning vocalist, songwriter, producer, and creative catalyst. As founder and director of Songwriting Works™, Friedman has composed hundreds of songs with elders across spectra of physical, cognitive and mental health. She is the recipient of the 2008 Blair Sadler/ Society for Arts in HealthCare International Healing Arts award, 2007 Met Life/American Society on Aging MindAlert award, and a 2009 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Friedman’s publications on thealth and social benefits for elders engaged in music include “Freeing the Voice Within: The Art of Songwriting with Elders with Dementia,” and the CD “Island on a Hill,” with Singers and Songwriters of the Jewish Home San Francisco. She is featured with the Jewish Home songwriters, average age 87, in Nathan Friedkin’s award-winning documentary “A 'Specially Wonderful Affair.” To learn more visit at songwritingworks.org and judithkate.com.
